Hey what’s up guys! Kathy Gibbens here…Hey, have you checked out yesterday’s episode yet? I hope so! It was my first interview here on the show, and I thought it was great, especially if you’re interested in learning what it means to defend your faith. Brett did a great job talking about why & how he dove into apologetics. And the reason I wanted to have him on the podcast is because I see such an important correlation between critical thinking and apologetics.
In fact, I feel very strongly - strongly enough to have started a whole podcast on the topic! - that learning to think WELL is one of THE most important skills we can teach our kids.
Why? Because we are living in a world that is dripping in relativism - the belief that there is no absolute truth…you can have your truth, I can have my truth, they can have their truth, and they’re all equally valid and equally true. And you’re accused of being unloving and bigoted if you don’t validate whatever “truth” the other person is holding to that particular day. But, just like I tell you at the end of EVERY single podcast episode, we have to ask the question, “Is that really true?” Is it really unloving to go along with a lie?
The Bible tells us that we are to love our neighbor, it’s one of the greatest commandments, right behind loving the Lord our God with all our heart, all our soul and all our strength. So then we have to ask the question, “what does it mean to love?” The Bible also says “you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free”. Huh…the TRUTH sets us free. THE truth. Not YOUR truth, THE truth. So then we have to ask the question, “What is the truth? Where does it come from? Who gets to decide? Can there be more than one truth?” And by the way, I think this would be a GREAT conversation to have with your kids!! Seriously, ask them these questions and talk with them about this!
* Here’s the thing…our culture has taken a drastic shift in the direction of relativism, and our kids have GOT to be able to recognize it and think about it well.
* Have you ever seen any of those “man on the street” interviews where someone goes to a college campus or some public area and just asks random people questions? Sometimes they’re simple questions that we are shocked when people don’t know the answer to them, but sometimes they’re really important questions about what’s true and right. Y’all, the answers that people come up with are shocking to me, and I’d venture to say, they’re shocking to you, too.
* I have a teenager and this is the world she’s growing up in. We have to prepare our kids to navigate the rapids of the world they’re going to find themselves living in. I am very burdened about this & I’m passionate about teaching our kids to think WELL…not to make our thinking & reasoning into an idol, but to lay a solid foundation to build a life upon, so they’re not blown & tossed by the wind of every crazy idea that pops up!
To that end, I created this podcast, and I’m going to go one step further and create a resource to help parents do exactly that.
I’m planning to create a resource that you can use every month to enable you have great conversations with your kids that help you - and them - look at real examples from current culture and think about them WELL.
Here’s what I’m thinking:
Now, this resource isn’t created yet, I'm going to be working on it over the next few months and hopefully have it ready to go by the time school starts in the fall. It’s not going to be a difficult or burdensome curriculum to add to your already-busy life…naw, nobody has time for that. My plan is to make it super-simple, where once a month, you get an email and can easily access something you can dive into together with your middle-or-high schooler and have a great discussion about, knowing that they - and you - will come out of it with your thinking skills sharpened just that much more. And, as I always say, I’m not going to be telling you or your kids WHAT to think!! NO!!! That’s your job to press in toward truth! But I will supply you the material and some good questions and point you in the direction toward the tools that will help you think about it well.
Now, if you’re interested in this, I want to encourage you to get on my email list b/c that’s where I’ll be announcing it first. And if you’re remotely interested in it, you’ll want to get in on it early. I’ll be launching at a very low price for the folks who sign up first. After that, the price will go up. So, if you want to be notified of when this launch happens, get on my email list! It’s super easy, just go to www.filteritthroughabraincell.com and you’ll see a yellow button that says something like, “Get notified when new episodes drop” That’s the link to get on my email list. Just click that and put in your email address and you’ll be on the list.
Seriously, My goal in this is to create the resource I want to have to be able to have these conversations with my own daughter and I’m excited to share them with you. I am very burdened for our culture and our kids who are going to be living in it and I want to create a resource to help prepare them to navigate it WELL!!
Alright, that’s it for today!
Remember: When you learn HOW to think, you will no longer fall prey to those who are trying to tell you what THEY want you to think and it all starts with asking one simple question: “Is that really true?”
