Hey what’s up Thinkers! Kathy Gibbens here…
Today, I want to talk about bridging the gap between listening to this podcast and learning about the Fallacies and actually being able to use them. Now, you may be thinking…isn’t learning about them enough? Like, I’m more aware of bad thinking than I was before, what else do I need?
Why do we need to go from just knowing about Fallacies to being able to think well? (results)
Media Discernment
Makes you impossible to fool with propaganda
Makes you more winsome when communicating your thoughts and ideas
Emotional & Mental well-being
Foundations of Apologetics & strengthen your faith
1. Learn & Practice the Basics. Skills that aren’t practiced aren’t usable. Even if you’ve listened to all 105 episodes of the FitABC podcast, if you don’t practice using what you’ve learned, the chances of you recognizing the different fallacies and being able to name them are very small. I know b/c I research, study & write each podcast episode and I STILL forget them! That’s one of the reasons I include a review of a previous Fallacy in so many of the episodes…to review them!
Practice controlling your emotions so you even have a chance to think about things logically. It’s a fascinating part of our human physiology that the more emotionally hijacked we are, the dumber we become, meaning the less able we are to think logically. When we’re emotional, we tend to just react rather than think critically. When we’re offended, angry, hurt, defensive, etc, it’s really hard to think well. So, we have to practice this. Yes, you CAN learn to manage our feelings - notice I didn’t say ignore - I said manage. And we’ll never become good thinkers when we’re controlled by our emotions.
Practice having good conversations with others.
2. Ask good questions: 5CT. My husband is naturally curious, and a naturally good question-asker. I am not. I like to think, but I’ve never been particularly good at asking questions that help lead me to the truth. Until the past few years, when I’ve learned a simple system that helps me ask good questions. There are 5 parts to this, and honestly, each one of them could be its own separate episode, so I”m not going to get into the details today, other than to say that an integral part of good thinking is learning to ask good questions. What is the goal of asking good questions? That brings us to step 3:
3. Develop Discernment. So you can seek Truth.
And have fun doing it!

Remember: When you learn HOW to think, you will no longer fall prey to those who are trying to tell you what THEY want you to think and it all starts with asking one simple question: “Is that really true?”
